Yoel Romero Feared Broken Leg After UFC 221 Victory

It all goes down later tonight (Sat., Feb. 10, 2018) at UFC 221 live on pay-per-view (PPV) from inside Perth Arena in Perth, Australia, as former UFC middleweight champion Luke Rockhold takes another shot at divisional gold when he takes on 185-pound tank Yoel Romero for interim title rights.

It was a bittersweet performance for Romero, however, as he missed weight on Friday, nullifying his opportunity to win the interim title that was supposed to be at stake and making it hard to hustle him into a rematch with Robert Whittaker whenever the middleweight champ is ready to return. Against Rockhold, the Cuban native looked to rebound from his decision loss to Whittaker in their initial interim title fight at UFC 213 in July 2017.

"Romero took this fight on short notice when [Robert] Whittaker fell out, and he didn't get a full camp", White said, per Okamoto.

Romero, ranked No. 1 at middleweight, was a replacement Saturday for Whittaker, who backed out of the title fight January 12 after enduring a medley of ailments. The look on Rockhold's face as Romero tried to profess his "love" was sheer anguish.

Rockhold (16-4) applied the pressure in Round 1 in his attempt to break down his opponent and claim the interim belt.

Both fighters were transported to hospital immediately after the event - Romero suffered a shin injury so severe he had to be assisted out of the cage by his team. Knowing the UFC, odds are Romero's weight miss will be swept under the rug.

Whittaker got the judges nod in a brilliant back-and-forth bout. Although these weren't massive fights for the mainstream audience or perhaps even some hardcore fans, this is exactly why these three were on the main card.

Rockhold appears to be in good spirits, though, who took to social media to congratulate the victor. This streak is highlighted by wins over Brad Tavares, Uriah Hall, Rafael Natal, Derek Brunson, "Jacare", and of course, Romero. We had a week plan laid out and we got a call from the UFC and we knew there was going to be a little bit of a problem, but we didn't think there was actually going to be a problem come weight day. "It messed up my plans for the weight cut a little bit".
