"Russia hacked our elections", Schumer said.

Naryshkin, who was appointed by Russian President Vladimir Putin to head the SVR in September 2016, was sanctioned by the Obama administration in March 2014 as part of the USA response to Russia's annexation of Crimea.

Pompeo did not address whether the topic of Russian election interference was raised in these meetings, something which President Trump has sought to downplay but the Central Intelligence Agency director continues to mention as a threat.

The Washington Post said on January 31 that Bortnikov and Korobov came to the USA capital last week and that Bortnikov had met with CIA Director Mike Pompeo, as did Naryshkin.

The CIA chief added that USA officials sometimes meet with Russian intelligence counterparts in order to "work together on issues such as aviation security and preventing foreign fighters returning to both Russia and America'".

"We periodically meet with our Russian intelligence counterparts for the same reason our predecessors did - to keep America safe", wrote in a letter to the New York Democrat.

Schumer had called for the White House to release details of Naryshkin's trip and whether the decision this week not to impose additional Russian Federation sanctions was related to his visit.

"A US meeting with the chief of the SVR a little more than a year after our Intelligence Community unanimously concluded that interfered in the 2016 USA election raises a number important questions", Mr. Schumer wrote.

"Given the political conditions in the United States now, it's flabbergasting to be honest". But Democrats criticized the list, saying it had been cobbled together from publicly available sources, including Forbes magazine's list of the wealthiest Russians. "Director Pompeo's refusal to answer that question is deeply troubling".

CIA Director Mike Pompeo expects Russian Federation to meddle in the USA midterm elections later this year, the BBC reported.

Asked if Trump's use of Twitter posed any national security issues, he said: "Hasn't caused us any trouble".

"By imposing no new sanctions under CAATSA mandates, the USA remains vulnerable to an emboldened Russian government in advance of this November's congressional elections", 24 Democratic senators wrote in a letter to Trump Tuesday night.

Antonov did not identify the US intelligence officials with whom he met.

"While we do not discuss the schedules of USA intelligence leaders, rest assured that any interaction with foreign intelligence agencies would have been conducted in accordance with USA law and in consultation with appropriate departments and agencies", a CIA spokesman said.

Jonathan Schanzer, a sanctions expert at the Foundation for the Defense of Democracies, said that typically, people who have been sanctioned have their assets frozen and are barred from entering the United States. The officials were not authorized to disclose the information and spoke on condition of anonymity. "So which other sanctioned Russian Federation intelligence agency figures has the Trump administration let into our country?"

"Nobody in either party trusts this president to represent American national interests when it comes to Russia", Brown said. "I haven't seen a significant decrease in their activity", he said.
