On Sunday, more than 30 people were sent to jail on charges of murder and 51 others were detained by police, in connection with the violence that erupted in the vicinity.

Meanwhile, the BJP MLA from Kasganj demanded that Chandan Gupta, the youth killed in communal clashes in the town, should be accorded the status of a "martyr".

Director General of Police OP Singh has said those behind the violence will be dealt with under the ambit of the National Security Act. Why did police and administration fail to stop it? The news had gone viral on social media, fuelling anger among the people of the violence-hit district.

Further investigation revealed that the bullets fired on 22-year-old Chandan Gupta were shot from Saleem's house. Stray incidents of violence were reported from Kasganj on Tuesday but the situation was by and large peaceful on Wednesday, they said. The UP Government has also been asked to provide details of the steps taken to punish the culprits, an official said.

Amid a blame game over fixing responsibility for the Kasganj violence, the RSS-linked Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) on Wednesday held a "Tiranga Yatra" in the Agra district of Uttar Pradesh.

District magistrate of Kasganj, RP Singh, also confirmed Saleem's arrest to the press.

The BJP leader added that this is a first such incident to have taken place after Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath came into power. They denied permission to the delegation from entering the troubled areas, citing law and order issues, official sources said.

Besides police, units of the anti-riot Rapid Action Force have been deployed in sensitive locations in the district to check untoward incidents, a senior Home Ministry official said.

The report, explaining the circumstances leading to Gupta's death, said a group was taking out "prabhat pheri (religious procession) and Tiranga juloos (Tricolour rally)" on January 26 and at a particular point that has a "mixed population", a scuffle ensued and stone pelting started.

The first Tiranga Yatra led by VHP vice-president of Braj region, Sunil Parashar, began its journey in Agra on Wednesday but was terminated nearly as soon as it began from Shaheed Smarak.
