The content will be accessible through a Walmart-Kobo app on both Apple and Android devices.

As part of the alliance, Walmart will become the exclusive retail partner of Rakuten Kobo in the United States, enabling it to offer Kobo's almost 6 million book titles.

"We want to be the destination for customers no matter how they want to shop. which includes adding new categories, products and brands", Scott Hilton, the chief revenue officer of Walmart's USA e-commerce business, said in regard to Thursday's announcement.

Seven and i Holdings Co Ltd, operator of Japan's largest chain of convenience stores, past year announced it would cooperate on fresh food delivery with Askul Corp. Walmart offers delivery of online grocery orders in several countries including Britain, Canada, and Mexico.

Kobo, which had attempted to make a big breakthrough in the the start of this decade through a partnership with Borders, which is now bankrupt, offers approximately six million ebooks.
