Marcus Mariota did what few quarterbacks have ever done before at the National Football League level this Saturday in Kansas City - he caught his own touchdown pass. It was nearly a disaster, as a Chiefs defender got his hands on the pass and batted it up in the air. With the score at 21-16, the Titans lined up for two, but they ran a terribly designed play that gained one-yard and would've been nullified by an Illegal Shift penalty regardless. Chiefs cornerback Marcus Peters intercepted Mariota to snuff out a second-quarter trip to the red zone, and Tennessee managed only a field goal before halftime.

He caught the ball and quickly dove into the end zone for the freakish score.

Derrick Henry rushed for 156 yards and a touchdown to send the Titans (10-7) to the AFC Divisional round next week.

The Chiefs grabbed an early 14-0 lead against the Titans for the second time in as many seasons. Mariota capped an 80-yard march with a 22-yard bullet between two defenders to receiver Eric Decker, a touchdown that gave Tennessee the 22-21 lead. On the next possession, Alex Smith hit tight end Travis Kelce for a 13-yard score.

Tennessee won the coin toss and deferred to the second half.

With the weight of the Chiefs' past playoff failures now looming large, the Titans again took advantage.

Play-by-play man Sean McDonough congratulated Gruden on his transition back to coaching, and the former Raiders and Buccaneers head coach replied: "Nothing is official yet but these Chiefs fans have been on my case since I got here". Frank Zombo picked it up and began running the other way for what would have been two points, giving the Chiefs the lead back with just over six minutes left in the game. The Titans were getting ready to play their first playoff game since 2008, and the news was surely a bit of a distraction for Mularkey and for the team. The Titans needed a win in their regular-season finale and some help to earn a wild-card spot as the AFC's fifth seed.
