Southampton frustrates Spurs as Kane scores 99th EPL goal

Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino has told his Champions League-chasing side to up their game or risk missing out on a place in the Premier League's top four after failing to beat relegation-threatened Southampton.

Harry Kane scored his 99th Premier League goal but could not grab his century as Spurs dropped two points at St. Mary's.

Tottenham had been hoping to leapfrog Liverpool into fourth, but are two points behind Jurgen Klopp's side after this draw.

Southampton will not be forced into panic signings this month, according to Mauricio Pellegrino.

Saints have not won in the league since thrashing Everton 4-1 on November 26, but Pellegrino remains confident he can reverse the south coast club's fortunes.

"The people at this club, the board and the staff, they have been working with me since day one to try to improve our situation", said Pellegrino ahead of Sunday's Premier League clash with Tottenham at St Mary's.

"February is a really tough month for us".

Southampton remain in the Premier League's bottom three after a 1-1 draw at home to Tottenham on Sunday, Harry Kane scoring the equaliser.

Harry Kane has been in devastating form this season for Spurs and will be the danger man in this game as well.

Southampton need to win a game sooner rather than later.

Rose has not featured for Tottenham since they ran out 5-2 victors over Southampton on Boxing Day, but Pochettino is hopeful the England worldwide will return to action before the end of the month. Despite the visitors' determination Southampton still managed to maintain good amounts of possession, and looked to be largely in control of the game.

"We made a lot of mistakes in possession that allowed them a lot of transition, chances and allowed them to feel comfortable on the pitch".

"We are disappointed because our game wasn't great, our performance wasn't the best".

"Regarding Toby hopefully he can integrate some exercise with the group on Saturday", Pochettino said.

Kane had a chance to win it for Spurs in the closing moments but dragged his left-footed shot wide to ensure Southampton secured a much-needed point.

"But in football, in sport, if you don't want to be in hard situations, don't play the game, stay at home and don't play the game".
