Packers to hire Brian Gutekunst as GM

He was promoted to director of player personnel for the Packers back in March of 2016 and has spent almost two decades in the team's front office.

Gutekunst spent most of his time with the Packers in scouting, a skill that the organization likes to have in their GM.

Gutekunst previously served as Green Bay's director of player personnel. The man replacing him will come from a similar mold, as the Packers chose to give in-house candidate Brian Gutekunst as their new general manager. NFL Network reports he was also being considered for similar jobs in Houston and was there for an interview when the Packers made their offer.

Gutekunst may not have been the Packers' first choice.

Green Bay's decision comes less than 24 hours after the Seattle Seahawks declined their request to interview GM John Schneider for the same position. Thanks to a broken collarbone, Rodgers only appeared in seven games this season. Hiring an in-house personnel guy who aligns with his philosophy and a similar approach that Thompson took is a good thing for a coach who was given a quiet one-year extension in the middle of the last season.

"I have the best job in pro football, and no disrespect to the other 31 clubs, I love it here, I want to be here, but it has to fit for me, too, McCarthy said last week".
