Jio slashes JioPhone plan to Rs 49 from Rs 153

Till now, the entry point for JioPhone users was the Rs 153 plan wherein a customer would get 500 MB of data per day for 28 days.

Airtel plans, on the other hand, also offer similar benefits.

Jio's closest rival Bharti Airtel data cost per GB has dropped to Rs. 4 under its new schemes.

Reliance Jio had announced its 4G feature phone in August previous year that would be "effectively free" for users, but to prevent misuse of the scheme, JioPhone buyers were required to pay one-time fully refundable deposit of Rs 1,500. This offer was a comparison to airtel offer which states that unlimited calls, SMS and 1 GB data regularly.

Reliance Jio plans to cover 99 per cent of India's population in the coming years, and it plans on doing that by opening as many as 10,000 offices and 10 lakh outlets for physical distribution of its services, including devices like the JioPhone. All plans of Jio will carry on to provide free limitless calling and SMSs within the country even at the time of roaming. Those who top up by INR 349 will receive 2.5GB for data traffic per day, as compared to 2GB earlier. The plans offer 126GB of 4G data for former and 136GB later, with a daily FUP limit of 1.5GB data per day.

The shares of two telecom majors, Bharti Airtel and Idea cellular tanked around 6 per cent over a surprise republic day offer by Mukesh Ambani's Reliance Jio.

In a matter of just four short months, Reliance Jio's much touted about 4G VoLTE feature phone, JioPhone now leads the feature phone market in India. Plan 509 is now changed to 449 plan and it now offers 136GB data. These plans are Plan 198, Plan 398, Plan 448 and Plan 498. Airtel, on the other hand, offers 1GB daily data, and validity of 84 days, up from 70 days that it used to offer before. Customers will also get free SMSes benefits along with subscription to host of Jio apps with this prepaid recharge plan. Now, after the revision, the plan will offer 1.5GB daily data with the same 84 days validity.
