Grumpy Cat's Owner Wins Lawsuit

The company was awarded the money following a legal dispute with Grenade Beverage, who was licensed to create branded iced coffee but reportedly breached the contract to create branded coffee grounds and t-shirts.

Tardar Sauce became an internet celebrity back in 2012 when the brother of the cat's owner posted images of her grumpy facial expression on reddit. In the year 2013, Grenade's owners closed a deal of Dollars 150,000 to serve coffee with cat's face called "Grumppucinos".

Grenade Beverage paid to use her images on iced coffee products, but went further and launched a roasted coffee product without permission.

Grumpy Cat has a reason to turn her permanent frown upside down. Grumpy Cat's Facebook page has attracted 8.7 million followers and boasts an Instagram of a couple million more.

But it was this use of Grumpy Cat's image that lead to the lawsuit at California federal court. Many believed that her grumpy face could be due feline dwarfism and an underbite. And the cat's handler's didn't mention the coffee during an interview with Fox News, either, The Washington Post reported.

Grumpy Cat prompted a number of memes to be made.

In its suit, Grenade said Grumpy Cat did not promote the iced coffee enough on social media and did not follow a script written to warn Starbucks that the cat was "coming for it" during an appearance on Fox & Friends. They also complained they were told the cat would be appearing in a film alongside Will Ferrell and Jack Black, but this did not happen. "They are like Grumpy Cat".

"Grumpy Cat feels vindicated and feels the jury reached a just verdict", Grumpy Cat's lawyer David Jonelis said, describing it as "a complete victory".

Ultimately, the judge sided with the cat, saying Grenade needed to pay $710,000 in damages as well as a $1 nominal damage fee for breach of contract.
