ROGER Federer being interviewed by the Anchorman himself, Will Ferrell? "Is that true?" Ferrell asked.

"I didn't know that was going to happen".

Federer is coming off an extraordinary 2017, when he won a fifth Australian Open title and a record eighth at Wimbledon, and the way things are shaping there could be yet more glory with his main threats scrambling to be ready.

Of course, it was actor Will Ferrell who strode out to conduct the chat - to the roar of the crowd at Rod Laver Arena.

In the women's bracket, top-ranked Simona Halep fell behind 5-2 in the first set to teenage wild card Destanee Aiava before saving the set and winning it 7-6.

Federer won in 99 minutes and will face Germany's Jan-Lennard Struff next.

"In the immortal words of Ron Burgundy it's great to be here with two tennis legends Roger Federer and John MacIntosh", he began, channeling his highly quotable movie character.

Federer replied: "Maybe, maybe not".

Other hard-hitting questions he posed were: "You seem not to age. You seem ageless. Are you a witch or a vampire?".

He played his part in entertaining exchanges but Federer, sporting a diagonal pink stripe on his immaculate white kit, was in one of those moods when he could strike winners at will. I don't like those.

According to Ferrell, it was "probably a vampire".

Ferrell: Have you ever tasted wombat meat?

"I was a bit scared", Federer joked. "It is delicious, the national food of Australia", he informs the courtside sports fans. I kind of know it won't be. They're an awesome crowd.

"Does it get annoying when they scream, "Come on Roger, come on Roger", over and over again?" he needled.

"I feel like maybe somebody like a Rafa, with the year that he's had, and Novak with the six titles he's had here, even if it's unknown how he's feeling, they could very well be the favourites, too".

And with one final "Stay classy, Melbourne", that was it.
