Astros general manager Jeff Luhnow also told Jake Kaplan of the Houston Chronicle that he has spoken with several teams about Cole but has not agreed to any trades. He is scheduled to become a free agent after the 2019 season.

According to MLB.com, Houston has acquired Gerrit Cole from the Pirates.

Cole's wife, Amy, summed up the day by posting video of a roller-coaster ride on Twitter.

The Yankees' rotation now includes Luis Severino, Masahiro Tanaka, Sonny Gray and CC Sabathia.

And they have more significant holes elsewhere on the roster, including second and third base, where they figure to go with Torres and Andujar if they don't make any other additions before spring training.

The Yankees were also considered to be interested in Cole's services but contract talks with the Pirates fell off and never resumed.

Pittsburgh selected Cole with the first overall pick in the 2011 draft.

Gerrit Cole won't be a Yankee after all. His home-run rate spiked dramatically to 1.4 per nine after allowing 0.6 per nine for the first four years of his career.

Instead, he may head to the team that vanquished the Yankees in a classic seven-game American League Championship Series last autumn.
