He finally seemed to break through into the Arsenal line-up following his time with the Addicks, playing in at least 20 PremierLeague games each of the next three seasons and starting a minimum of 19 each campaign.

Having made just seven Premier League starts for Arsene Wenger's side this term, it is a decision Coquelin admits might not have been the right one.

Speaking about Coquelin's move, he told Sky Sports: 'I'm happy for him because he's going to go to a team that is challenging at the minute in a very hard league to win.

He added: 'I've seen the team, they are doing very well, third in the table.

Asked by Sky Sports after Arsenal drew 0-0 at Chelsea if Coquelin was about to leave Arsenal, Wenger replied: "Yes".

"He is a fantastic player with lots of potential still to come, he is a joy to coach and he is a good teammate for all our players and he works very hard".

'I think I was looking at it on TV yesterday, and they were saying who Arsenal can sign.

Arsenal are in the process of clearing out a number of their fringe players now the January transfer window is in full force.

Coquelin spent nearly a decade at Arsenal after joining the Gunners in 2008 from French side Stade Lavallois.

Loan spells at Lorient, Freiburg and Charlton followed before Coquelin broke into the Arsenal first team on a regular basis in the 2014-15 season.
