The incident came to light after police received information from passerby regarding the accident near Singhu Border at around 4:14 am on Sunday.

Four Indian powerlifting players were killed and two others injured as a private auto carrying them overturned on the Delhi-Chandigarh highway in Delhi today.

Four powerlifting players from Delhi were killed when the auto they were in hit a road divider and crashed into a pole on the Delhi-Chandigarh highway today morning.

DCP (Rohini) Rajneesh Gupta said the deceased have been identified as Tikamchand alias Tinka (27), Saurabh (18), Yogesh (24) and Harish Roy (20).

Saksham Yadav died in the evening at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) trauma centre here. A sixth weightlifter (19) was battling for life. Saksham Yadav and Rohit were rushed to Max Hospital in Delhi's Shalimar Bagh. Due to severe impact, the car's roof was blown away. The possibility of drunken driving has also not been ruled out.

With the fog and smog conditions severely clouding visibility, one must ensure their own safety and that of other's around them on the roads by adhering to speed limits or even going below them to stay safe. All of them were residents of north Delhi's Timarpur. "They were celebrating Rohit's birthday on Saturday and had gone to Karnal (in Haryana)", the officer said.

"The speed of the vehicle was very high".

The auto, the athletes were travelling in, first hit a road divider before crashing into an electric police, police said.

Bottles of liquor were reportedly found in the vehicle.

The accident took place on the Delhi-Chandigarh highway.
