Tennessee hires Phillip Fulmer as athletic director

Washington State football coach Mike Leach appears to nearing an agreement to take the reins at Tennessee, according to several reports night. Former Vols head coach Phil Fulmer is said to be one of those battling with Currie and that could muck up the process to reel in Leach. He returned to Knoxville on Friday.

And on Friday morning, a decision was made to dismiss Currie from his position.

When asked if he had been fired, Currie refused to comment on what happened during the meeting. He has a 38-27 mark in six seasons with the Cougars.

Tennessee fired former coach Butch Jones on November 12 and the Volunteers reportedly offered the job to Ohio State defensive coordinator Greg Schiano, but then backed out of the deal due to backlash from Tennessee boosters and fans. Before coming to Kansas State, he worked at Tennessee for about a decade in various capacities, most recently as a chief deputy and adviser to former athletic director Mike Hamilton.

Currie on Monday defended the coaching search and vetting of leading candidate Greg Schiano, a day after the Volunteers backed out of the hiring agreement following a public backlash and campus protests. Schiano spent five seasons at Penn State, four as the defensive backs coach on the staff with Sandusky, who was the defensive coordinator.

Former head coach Butch Jones was sacked in November.

Reports linked Oklahoma State's Mike Gundy and Purdue's Jeff Brohm to Tennessee's vacancy, but both stayed with their respective teams.

Jones was sacked the day after Tennessee lost 50-17 at Missouri to fall to 0-6 in Southeastern Conference play.

After being ranked in the Top 25 at the start of the year, Tennessee went 4-8 to set a school record for losses.
