Ferguson says besides getting a flu shot, people should wash their hands frequently and cover their mouths when they cough or sneeze.

"People with egg allergy of any severity can receive the influenza vaccine without any special precautions", said Dr. Matthew Greenhawt, the paper's lead author and chairman of the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology Food Allergy Committee.

The issue for people with allergies, according to the paper, is that the vaccine may continue to bear traces of where it was grown-specifically, there may be an egg protein called ovalbumin that finds its way into the shot.

Over the course of a typical flu season - which runs from October to May in the United States - hundreds of thousands of people are hospitalized with the virus and tens of thousands die from it, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Those studies showed that people with egg allergies were no more likely than others to react to a flu shot.

She said there is a possibility that the influenza strain they've put in the vaccine this year "may not be a good match", but it's not definitive at this point.

Dayton Children's admitted its first child with flu symptoms this season during the week of December 4 but OH hasn't seen any pediatric deaths so far.

If the vaccine is age-appropriate, it can be used for anyone with or without egg allergy.

That means patients don't need to see an allergist to get the flu shot, or require a longer-than-usual observation period after receiving the injection. Anaphylaxis can happen with any vaccine at a rate of about one per million, no matter the type or whether the person has an allergy.

The flu is now considered to be widespread in CT, according to health officials.

"My understanding is there's definitely some open beds at this time, we have the capacity to open extra beds if needed still", Khan said.

"You may be able to pass on the flu to someone else before you know you are sick, as well as while you are sick", the agency says. "It's a very important vaccine to get every year".
