Earlier this week, the Salvation Army put out a desperate call for donations for their annual Christmas Hamper program.

Police said they are hopeful mall and MARTA surveillance cameras may help catch the suspect. The office is adopting a charity a month and for Christmas they chose to help get presents for almost 50 area kids in need of a Christmas.

Dennis Long, of Montgomery, Ala., Dollar General's director of loss prevention for the Southeast, said helping the Salvation Army enriches the lives of the volunteers by giving back to the local community and children.

But, whether their goal is met or not, volunteers like Anna say they will continue to do their part encouraging others to help brighten the holidays for someone less fortunate. With a total number of days being 37 this season, they will have three less days than the 2016 campaign, one of them being Christmas Eve, their biggest day of the year. On Tuesday evening, there were only four volunteers available for the 15 red-kettle stands in the Lowell area. Money collected during the Red Kettle Campaign helps fund meals for those in need and Christmas gifts for children who might not otherwise have anything to open on Christmas morning.

"We haven't really been at Safeway very much, we haven't been at No Frills very much".

Police in Dunwoody, Georgia, are working to find a boy who stole a Salvation Army kettle.

More than 2,200 applications were accepted this year, proving the need is growing in our community.

"We're volunteers, so we're not paying anybody. Patrons include families with young children and seniors", she said.

The warehouse at 901 Trade St. has about 19,000 square feet, and the Salvation Army is using about half of that space. The Houston Salvation Army thrift store is still accepting donations and the can be dropped off at 3429 10 Street.
