Five terrorists shot dead in separate encounters

Security forces on Thursday killed five terrorists in two separate encounter in Kashmir Valley on Thursday.

Four militants including a top commander of Lashkar-e-Toiba were killed in twin encounters with forces in Budgam and Sopore on Thursday while a civilian was injured in forces firing on protestors near the encounter site in Budgam.

Eyewitnesses from the encounter site said that a house in which the militants were believed to be hiding has been blasted by forces.

Army sources said one militant has been killed but the body has not been recovered yet.

In 2016, 165 militants were killed by the security forces along the Line of Control (LoC) and in the hinterland.

When last reports came in, door-to-door searches were being carried out in the area.

The number of security forces killed in militancy-related incidents this year was 77, lower than the 88 fatalities witnessed last year.

"Four militants were killed in the gunbattle", the official said adding the operation was still in progress. He was shifted to a hospital in Srinagar, police said. The slain man has been identified as Muzamil, a resident of Pakistan, the police said. However, doctors said three of the injured civilians, including a 15-year-old boy, had gunshot wounds.

Meanwhile, Jammu Kashmir Police Chief SP Vaid took to Twitter and wrote: "Today by the collective efforts of Jammu Kashmir Police, Indian Army, CRPF and people of Kashmir have led to neutralization of more than 200 militants in the year of 2017 alone. This marks a huge landmark for establishing peace & stability in the state of J&K &our country (sic)".

The administration has suspended Internet services in the district to prevent spreading of rumours.
