Tony Podesta bails on lobbying firm amid Mueller probe

Podesta founded the eponymous Podesta Group in 1988 along with his brother, John, although John left in the mid-90s.

Podesta Group is said to be "Company B" in the indictment against Manafort that was unsealed Monday; Manafort recruited Podesta's firm to do public relations work on behalf of Ukraine, though insinuations are that that was a front for work on behalf of former Ukranian president Victor Yanukovych, the pro-Russia official who was forced out in 2014.

President Trump in a Tuesday tweet said the biggest story on Monday that has the "Dems in a dither" wasn't the indictment against his former campaign manager in the Russian Federation probe but a top Democratic lobbyist stepping down from his firm. The meeting ended with a resounding ovation for Podesta.

The lobbying firms provided a Washington voice, while the think tank shielded Manafort's client, Victor Yanukovych, then president of Ukraine. The charges against Mr. Manafort and Mr. Gates that are related to the act, coming as powerful members of Congress are demanding more enforcement of the law, were seen by some as a shot across the bow of Washington lobbyists.

Molly Levinson, a spokeswoman for the Podesta Group, said the firm's work was "in support of Ukraine's admission into the [European Union]", and the Brussels nonprofit had certified that "it was neither funded by nor directed by a government or political party".

The letter from Podesta's lawyer claimed the lobbying firm never worked with Manafort, despite details in the indictment clearly stating the group did work on behalf of the European Centre for a Modern Ukraine to promote Ukraine in the U.S.

Unlike Trump's former campaign chairman, Paul Manafort, and his protégé Rick Gates, Podesta has yet to be charged with any crimes. Carlson also reported that Manafort's company, the European Center for a Modern Ukraine, was a major client of the Podesta group. "Based on our due diligence and on the recommendation of definitive legal experts, the firm immediately filed the appropriate public disclosures of its representation of the ECFMU over five years ago, and in eight subsequent public filings". The Podesta Group's work for ECFMU, a nonprofit, was in support of Ukraine's admission to the European Union, a position supported by foreign policy experts at the time.

"The biggest story yesterday, the one that has the Dems in a dither, is Podesta running from his firm", Trump wrote in a two-part tweet that contained grammatical errors. The primary contact for Mercury's Washington office couldn't be reached for comment.

The investigation into Podesta and his firm initially started when Manafort's finances were examined by Mueller's unit.
