Tennessee fans react negatively to Greg Schiano

Schiano has previous head coaching experience, having coached in the National Football League for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and at the college level for Rutgers. Schiano is now assistant head coach and defensive coordinator at Ohio State.

USA Today Sports first reported that Tennessee and Schiano were working to finalize a deal.

After firing Butch Jones earlier this season, the Tennessee Volunteers have been taking part in a national search for a replacement.

The Tennessee Volunteers just finished their worst season-at least by total wins-since 1977, going 4-8 with zero victories in SEC play. His NFL tenure was brief, with a 11-21 record and some tumult. Documents revealed in 2016 allege that Schiano knew about the abuse carried out by defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky, though Schiano denies this.

Tennessee is facing severe backlash for their decision to hire Greg Schiano as their next head coach. Rutgers had not been to a bowl game since 1978 when Schiano took the job, but led the Scarlet Knights to six bowl games in his final seven years. In 2006, Schiano went 11-2 at Rutgers and won numerous national coach of the year awards.

Schiano worked at Penn State from 1990-95, first as a graduate assistant and then as defensive backs coach.
