Russian fighter executes 'unsafe intercept' of US Navy plane over Black Sea

A spokesperson for the Pentagon tells CNN that a Russian fighter jet made an "unsafe", unprovoked intercept of a USA aircraft in worldwide waters on Saturday, Nov. 25.

Russian military confirmed Tuesday that its warplane drove away a U.S. Navy aircraft last week over the Black Sea.

A RUSSIAN fighter jet buzzed a U.S. aircraft flying over the Black Sea, causing it to roll and suffer violent turbulence during the harrowing mid-air confrontation.

"The Russian military is within its right to exercise within global airspace, but they must respect worldwide standards set to ensure safety and prevent incidents", Baldanza said.

The U.S. P-8A Poseidon did nothing to provoke the maneuver, defense spokesperson Michelle Baldanza told the Daily News.

"After moving closer, the Russian [Su-30] fighter jet flew over the object and visually identified it as an American reconnaissance aircraft Р8А Poseidon", the statement reads. A spokesperson at the US Air Force said in a statement at the time that, "there are worldwide standards to ensure safety and prevent incidents".

"Unsafe actions‎ have the potential to cause serious harm and injury to all air crews involved", she said.

Pentagon spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Michelle Baldanza told the broadcaster: "The US aircraft was operating in global airspace and did nothing to provoke this Russian behaviour".
