It added: "All legal steps are now being taken with regards to this decision by a court of first instance".

Former Real Madrid, Manchester City and AC Milan star Robinho has been sentenced to a nine-year prison term after being found guilty of sexual assault, according to reports in Italy.

According to Italian wire service ANSA, the 33-year-old Brazilian, who now plays for Atletico Mineiro in his native country, was convicted, along with five others, of gang-raping a 22-year-old Albanian woman in a Milan nightclub in January 2013.

Now playing for Atletico Mineiro in his native Brazil, Robinho's lawyer said in a statement that the 33-year-old Robinho denied the charges and will appeal the court's decision. The married forward along with five other men have been charged.

The Brazilian star had previously been accused of sexual assault while at City in 2009, but was later cleared of the charges.

He now has the right to appeal, with the sentence not enforced until the completion of this process. Brazil does not extradite its own citizens when they are sentenced in other countries.

However, he failed to live up to expectations at City and left the club after one and a half seasons, joining Santos on loan before making a permanent move to Milan.

The attacker did go on to win the Serie A title with the Italian side, teaming up with Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Antonio Cassano to conquer the division.

He's been with Atletico Mineiro since February of a year ago.
