New 2019 BMW i8 Roadster and Coupe Revealed

The Roadster wasn't the only i8-related development BMW unveiled in LA; since the i8 Coupe was introduced, electrification technology has evolved, and it benefits from the implements that have gone into the Roadster.

The unladen weight of the i8 Roadster stands at 3513 lbs., making it some 132 lbs. heavier than the Coupe. For the 2019 model year, BMW increased the battery size from 7.1 to 11.6 kilowatt-hours, thereby increasing the electric motor output from 129 to 141 horsepower.

The 2019 BMW i8 Roadster features an electric soft top that can open in less than 16 seconds and operate at speeds up to 31 miles per hour.

In Roadster guise, this allows the i8 to complete the sprint from 0-60mph in 4.4 seconds, while the Coupe manages it in 4.2 seconds. The electric motors now produce 105kW/143bhp and can drive the auto to 105kmph on pure battery power which can be increased to 120kmph at a push of a (eDrive) button.

BMW claims the Roadster is capable of hitting 100kph from a standstill in 4.6 seconds, while the i8 Coupe facelift does the same in 4.4 seconds.

Thanks to a more powerful electric motor, which is still mated to a 170kW version of BMW's 1.5-litre three-cylinder turbopetrol engine, the BMW i8 now boasts a total system output of 275kW, up from 266kW.

The most important announcement is without a doubt the addition of the i8 Roadster.

These numbers mean that while Elon Musk's new Tesla Roadster can promise a 0-60 run in 1.9 seconds, the i8 family remains on the conservative side with a time of 4.2 seconds for the Coupe, and 4.4 for the Roadster.

Electric-only range is up to 18 miles - a gain of 3 miles. The lithium-ion battery cell capacity is up from 20 to 34 Ah.

Standard features on both the coupe and roadster include a fast charging cable, the Professional satellite navigation system, the company's latest tile-based iDrive infotainment system, a freestanding 8.8-inch screen, dynamic damper control, automated emergency braking, cruise control, and a 2.2-inch touchscreen display built into the key fob. The 2019 BMW i8 Roadster and coupe both go on sale next spring.

BMW has revised the windscreen by providing it with a strengthened frame and beefed-up quarter windows in order to accommodate the new folding roof. The new E-Copper finish and the striking Donington Gray shade have also been added to the range.
