Minister Susan Shabangu Congratulates Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters for Winning Miss Universe

From 92 women around the world, the coveted title went to Miss South Africa, whose name is Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters. Miss Universe consists of around 90 women from all over the world who compete in various competitions, like the swimsuit competition, formal wear, and communication skills, where they are asked various questions on public health issues like social media and mental health, terrorism, social movements and so forth.

"Nel-Peters, a graduate in business management, hoisted the South African flag high, undoubtedly she will keep on representing the country well and add a voice to the emancipation of women here at home and across the globe", said Minister Shabangu.

The 22-year-old Nel-Peters has earned a yearlong salary, a luxury apartment in New York City for the duration of her reign and more prizes. This year's edition had the most contestants ever, including the first representatives in its history of Cambodia, Laos and Nepal.

The other top finalists included Jamaica as the second runner-up and Colombia as runner-up.

Miss South Africa, Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters, won the event and will take over for Iris for the coming year.

Congrats to Bennett for slaying in this Miss Universe competition, and for showing natural-haired women an Afro is just as attractive as any blowout in the book. "And as a radio chemist, I advocate for so many children in S.T.E.M. and women in leadership positions and that's the mission of a Miss Universe".

"As Miss Universe, you have to be confident in who you are as an individual", she said. "I think we should have equal work for equal pay for women all over the world".

Steve Harvey returned as the show's host and thank goodness, this time Steve Harvey read out the correct name, after the embarrassing gaffe in 2015 where he called out the wrong victor.

"The Universe is now brighter with you as a shining star".

Seated on the judges tables were Miss Universe 2015 Pia Wurtzbach, Hollywood Today host Ross Mathews, fashion correspondent Jay Manuel, top internet influencer Lele Pons, UFC backstage reporter Megan Olivi, hair care/spa products company founder Farouk Shami, and Miss Universe 1998 Wendy Fitzwilliam.
