Linking Aadhaar with mobile number must by February 6, says Centre

The apex court did not pass any interim order in the matter saying that final hearing in all Aadhaar-related issues would start before another bench in the last week of this month and the Centre has already extended the deadline till December 31.

Banks and mobile service providers have to now inform users about the last date to link their 12-digit Aadhaar number with the respective bank accounts and SIM cards.

The petitions sought to challenge a circular issued in March by the department of telecommunication, making it mandatory for all mobile phone holders to link their numbers with Aadhaar by February 6, 2018.

The top court's ruling comes as a temporary relief for people who are facing threats of their bank accounts being frozen and mobile connections snapped if they are not linked to Aadhaar.

Justice Sikri told attorney general K.K. Venugopal, "Initially, I did not want to say this because of the press is here".

The bench made the observation after the counsel for the petitioners contended that the messages without the specific deadlines were creating panic among customers that their mobile number or the bank account will be immediately invalidated. And today the Supreme Court to hear the petitions against the Aadhaar Card validity.

In an affidavit filed before the apex court, the Centre also said production of Aadhaar was mandatory for opening new bank accounts.

The Bench has tagged these petitions with the existing ones challenging the Act, and has asked the parties concerned to approach the concerned Bench and make necessary requests.

However to open new accounts, Aadhaar would be mandatory with immediate effect, the Centre also stated. Earlier in October, the Supreme Court had extended the date for linking of Aadhaar for receiving benefits of govt schemes to March 31, 2018.

The Centre further added that the 12-digit number and the mobile number must be linked within the stipulated time frame since a decision like extending the deadline can not be extended unilaterally.
