Google to show estimated wait times for restaurants

It has been nearly a year since Google began showing their Popular Times feature in Google Search and Maps, so today, they are adding an additional bit of information to it. Although not specified, this likely involves some activity and location tracking data being collected by Google from user's smartphones.

If weird food trends (cronut, anyone?) have taught us anything it's that people are prepared to wait a long time for a seat at a restaurant, so whether you're visiting a popular local eatery or Time Out's latest gastro-pick, you're faced with two choices.

When this feature is available, all you have to do is search for the business name to find current wait times.

With the addition, Google is at least partly challenging existing apps like NoWait, which is handy for seeing restaurant wait times. Plus, you can see each day's wait times below the hour bars, allowing you to plan ahead to avoid busy times. Similar to the busy times, a bar graph will show you the busiest times. The information will be available for almost 1 million sit-down restaurants around the globe.

If you're planning a few days ahead you can swipe left or right to see estimated wait times for every day that the restaurant is open. And up next, says Google: Grocery stores.
