Police in London, U.K. are on scene at popular tourist spot Covent Garden, after a taxi reportedly hit several people Wednesday evening.

An eyewitness described seeing a person trapped under the taxi and "hearing screams" as pedestrians were struck just after 17.00 GMT (6am NZDT).

Two people are being treated by London Ambulance Service at the scene.

It is reported that there is still one person trapped under the auto but these reports have yet to be confirmed.

Stuart Crichton of London Ambulance Service said: "A man was treated for a serious leg injury and taken to a major trauma centre as a priority".

"We're aware of an incident in #CoventGarden & have crews on scene".

London has been on a heightened state of alert after a number of vehicle-related incidents in the capital this year. "Not thought to be terrorist related", police said in a statement. The driver of the taxi stopped at the scene and has been detained by police. "A fourth patient was checked over at the scene".
