Arsenal had been tipped to make a move for the midfielder for a cut-price in January, however the Mirror are reporting that the Gunners have made the 22 year-old their number one target next summer.

Arsenal defender Nacho Monreal is confident that his teammates, Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil, will remain at the Emirates, at least until the end of the season, in an interview with the Independent.

Arsenal have made it clear they want him to stay, and are prepared to make him the highest paid player at the club if he decides to sign a new deal.

Despite the club being keen on keeping both of their top stars, the report goes on to state that Ozil will be allowed to leave for a fee of around £30million, meaning that Sanchez will have to wait until the summer to finally make his expected exit. At any rate, with the Germany global building a good reputation for himself, he may well hold out to see what next season's Champions League options are before committing.

When on form, Mesut Ozil is amongst the best players in the world.

Mauricio Pochettino's squad now look ahead to their home fixture against West Brom at the weekend. Even if we ignore the frequent rumours of Smalling's imminent departure from Old Trafford, this is more than a little arrogant - unlike Mourinho, Southgate seems more inclined to give young players a chance.

"At no time have we talked about the possibility of them leaving".

"The feeling is that they will continue", Monreal said.
