The suspect "intentionally assaulted Paul causing a minor injury", the news release said. Hodges did say that Boucher is an acquaintance of Paul, an ophthalmologist who was elected to the Senate in 2010. The alleged attacker was arrested and charged with fourth-degree assault.

His bond is recorded at $5,000 and a court date has not been set.

Kentucky State Police Master Trooper Jeremy Hodges said he could not release details of the assault because of security issues.

"Congressperson Paul was caught off-guard and the casualty of an ambush", Kelsey Cooper, Paul's interchanges chief in Kentucky said in an announcement to the Bowling Green Daily News.

An address on file with the county lists Boucher as living in a gated community just east of Paul's home in Bowling Green.

KSP says the investigation is ongoing.
