Philippe Coutinho January Move Discussed by CEO

After missing out on Coutinho, Barcelona's sporting director Albert Soler claimed that the club had decided against a move for the player after Liverpool had ultimately demanded €200m (£183m).

Barcelona have said they are in a position to pursue their interest in Philippe Coutinho in January after having bids for the Liverpool playmaker rejected in the summer.

"We are ready to buy Coutinho in the winter market, or any player the technical staff request", he said at a press conference on Wednesday. "We want to have the most competitive team possible".

'We must forget about the price paid for Neymar last summer.

The Brazil global also made an impressive start to this season for Liverpool, contributing to a combined four goals in his first six appearances.

In a long-running transfer saga, Barca did not give up their pursuit of the Brazil worldwide until deadline day, when sources told ESPN FC they claimed to have been asked for €200 million.

Klopp failed to sign top target Virgil van Dijk from Southampton in the summer transfer window to leave the Liverpool boss with centre-halves Dejan Lovren, Joel Matip and Ragnar Klavan.

Barcelona's advances for the 25-year-old were certainly warranted, with Coutinho scoring 14 goals and laying on nine assists in 36 games for the Reds last term.

At the time of writing, there are 20 more players to be revealed - at which point we will know who Coutinho is competing with for the award.
