Gareth Southgate's men secured their place at Russian Federation 2018 with an unconvincing 1-0 win over Slovenia at Wembley on Thursday evening.

Hart conceded that it was hard for the England supporters at Wembley as the team misfired, but it could not detract from his delight at qualification.

Joe Hart or Jordan Pickford?

"I would love us to be dominating with 80 per cent possession against the best teams of the world, but there is little evidence of that over the last five (years) - there's no real evidence of that over the last 50 years". Germany and company are unlikely to want to avoid England, which will not be among the top seeds when the draw for the finals is made.

"You are always at tournaments to win football matches but you also have to be thinking what is realistic", he said. Much as Eriksen does for Spurs, Lallana is England's key man because he offers something different, a creative quality lacking elsewhere.

Questions still remain over Hart's status as England's first choice goalkeeper after two seasons on loan from Manchester City and a poor showing at Euro 2016.

Harry Kane scored an added time goal to secure qualification with a game in-hand, with Wilshere now having the chance to represent his country in the finals next year. Such behavior can never be condoned, but England owes him a debt of goal-scoring gratitude.

England have won all three of their previous encounters with Lithuania on the global stage, scoring nine and conceding none in the process.

Harry Kane continued his stunning goalscoring form with a 94th-minute victor as an unimpressive England overcame Slovenia at Wembley.

Despite the unenthusiastic reaction to the performance, Kane says England should be proud of their achievement.

Glenn Hoddle was asked to pick a Man of the Match in the 87th minute, and his puzzled response said it all. We stuck at it and the number of late goals is no coincidence.

"We have got goalscorers and we have got some attacking players that we think will cause problems to any team in the world". I'd like to see England play three at the back throughout the tournament, so "traditional" full-backs aren't needed.

England's performance on Thursday was disjointed, lacklustre and lacked any semblance of creativity - and that's being kind.

No one can doubt England's consistency in qualifying for finals.

If Southgate has one reason to be cheerful, it is Kane. "We should be proud as a team and as a nation", the Spurs striker said. He is unselfish, has a prodigious work rate and is close to becoming the complete center-forward.

It's hard to imagine a starker contrast between performance and outcome than England's 1-0 victory over Slovenia at Wembley on Thursday night. Seems to be uncomfortable when being relied upon to play out from the back.
