Ghana beat Colombia in Group A opener

United States of America had defeated India 3-0 in their opening game of the FIFA Under-17 World Cup 2017.

Twice champions Ghana opened their FIFA Under-17 World Cup campaign on a winning note, beating Colombia 1-0 in a Group A match at the iconic Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi on Friday evening.

Injury problems permitting, the Ghana versus US tie will be a showdown between two of the most prolific strikers at the tournament; Eric Ayiah and the USA's captain and star striker Josh Sargent.

Sargent is already a member of the USA national U-20 team and in May this year became the youngest player to score for the Americans at the Federation Internationale de Football Association U-20 World Cup.

Ghana lost the African U-17 championship final to Mali earlier this year, and their last semi-finals appearance at the U-17 World Cup came in Korea Republic in 2007. We take it that all teams in this tournament are strong.

Ghana U-17 coach Samuel Fabin yesterday asserted that his team will play attacking football in the next fixture to seal a spot in the Round-of-16 after starting with a victory in their opening contest against Colombia here.

This is Colombia's sixth appearance at the U-17 World Cup and their first since 2009, when they finished third and matched their previous best performance at the tournament, going back to 2003.

"Team Colombia is looking forward (to qualifying) for Russian Federation, but this is a World Cup for me as well".

They created some risky goal scoring opportunities in the Ghanaian area, Blaine Ferri, in particular, went closest to scoring for the Americans, but both his free-kick effort and a dangerous-looking strike from the edge of the Ghana box missed the target. We are looking forward to playing a good game. "So we are right at home".
