Fired FBI Director Comey spotted in Iowa: It's for family, not politics

It was one of three tweets Comey sent from Iowa during a brief visit to the state, and it ended months of speculation as to whether that twitter account is his.

Update at 3:05 p.m. ET: The Des Moines Register reports Comey was in Iowa for a family party.

While Comey has not posted anything at all political, and doesn't seem to show any signs of doing such, today's tweet (image above) by the former FBI Director from that account all but confirmed he's the one behind it. "Will try to tweet in useful ways".

Comey, who is writing a book, tweeted on Friday that he was happy to be back in the Hawkeye State.

Speculation about the creator of the account soon began to mount and was further fueled when Gizmodo reported that Comey was most likely the person behind the tweets. Washington Post national reporter Robert Costa posted, "Former FBI director Jim Comey tweets this pensive photo from Iowa, wearing running shoes in the home of the caucuses".

Other Twitter users replied to Comey with their own special requests.

The Reinhold Niebuhr name on the account refers to an American theologist that the former Federal Bureau of Investigation director reportedly wrote his university thesis on.

The next day another photo was posted, this time showing a flock of pelicans against a blue sky, and referencing the Niebuhr's Serenity Prayer.

On Oct. 20, Comey posted a picture of what appeared to be him watching the sun peeking over the horizon in an Iowa cornfield.

Over the previous year, if you were to ask any political pundit who they'd like to see on Twitter the most, that person likely would have been former FBI Directly James Comey. While Twitter through their spokesman refused to confirm whether the account belonged to James B. Comey, the authentication of the account was confirmed by his close friend Benjamin Wittes.
