DC's Shazam Casts Thor Actor In Lead Role

Commentary: I have to admit, if you asked me to list every possible actor I thought could play Shazam, I doubt Zachary Levi would show up on that list. Levi is no stranger to the genre-he is already part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, having played Fandral in Thor: The Dark World and Thor: Ragnarok, which hits theaters next week.

As Movieweb reports, Shazam! has been in development for a while and, while Levi's casting has been confirmed, there are still holes to be filled in the cast list.

Zachary Levi is all set to star in DC comic book adaptation Shazam, to be directed by David F. Sandberg for New Line. It was only in 1970s that the DC banner took over the character. The $15 million horror sequel has earned a big $303 million worldwide since opening in August. Created by C.C. Beck and writer Bill Parker, the character was first published by Fawcett Comics. That being the case, the young actor playing Billy Batson still needs to be cast.

Other upcoming DC Extended Universe movies include Justice League on November 17, 2017, Aquaman on December 21, 2018, Wonder Woman 2 on December 13, 2019, Cyborg in 2020, and Green Lantern Corps in 2020.

Sandberg is directing the film with script by Henry Gayden and Darren Lemke. That's why so many Captain Marvel comics (and now the movie) leverage the name Shazam instead.

Exactly how much he'll bring to the DCEU remains to be seen, but with a brilliant team forming around the film and the movie acting as just one of the films slotting into proceedings, everything's looking bright for DC Films.
