Amazon's Jeff Bezos Overtakes Bill Gates, Emerges World's Richest Man, Again

Amazon founder and CEO Jeff Bezos became the world's richest person again Friday after a surge in his company's stock, according to Forbes World's Billionaires Real Time Ranking.

But according to Forbes magazine, which closely follows the world's greatest personal fortunes, taking into account, among other aspects, the value of their stock market assets, Bezos surpassed Gates on Friday as the richest person in the world.

At the close of USA markets on Friday, Mr Bezos had a net worth of US$93.8 billion, US$5.1 billion ahead of Mr Gates on the Bloomberg index, a daily ranking of the world's 500 richest people.

Inc shares surged today, lifting its founder's net worth by US$7.8 billion to US$91.3 billion as of 10am in NY, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index.

Today, the super-rich of the world took advantage of Amazon's better-than-expected earnings report to gobble up more of the only place big money can be made these days: the future.

Bezos owned almost 80 million shares in Amazon as of August, according to the most recent available data from FactSet.

Bezos, 53, topped the list July 27 before losing it hours later to Microsoft co-founder and CEO Bill Gates. However, Gates' Microsoft stock also jumped 7%, which kept him on top of Bezos. Facebook Inc's Mark Zuckerberg added US$2.1 billion.
