U. of C. moved up to No. 3 past year in a tie with Yale and is the only university in the Midwest in the top 10 list that is dominated by the Ivy League schools.

The magazine each year evaluates schools based on up to 15 criteria, including class size, standardized test scores of incoming students and average graduation rate.

The university's rise in the rankings came as KU has increased graduation rates in recent years. "It means our reputation of academic excellence is rising throughout the state and the nation, and that's a reflection of our world-class faculty, staff and students".

The University of SC was tied for 49th among national public universities with the University of New Hampshire.

BU also remains among the top 30 universities for undergrad engineering programs.

Beyond simply offering generous financial aid packages, UC Merced also excels when it comes to helping students graduate at rates higher than expected. Founded in 1885, the University offers more than 120 undergraduate and graduate degree programs in science, engineering and technology; forestry; business and economics; health professions; humanities; mathematics; and social sciences. The rankings, released today, include more than 310 national doctoral universities and will be included in the 2018 edition of America's Best Colleges.

As the publisher notes, a "host of intangibles" go into finding the right college, and rankings are just one piece of the puzzle.

UCCS, one of four campuses in the University of Colorado system, ranked 35th, up from 39th in 2017, in Regional Universities of the West. Cornell also sits at 71 out of 215 schools in the High School Counselor Rankings among the liberal arts colleges, which is a number that comes from high school counselor survey results over three years. The Ivy League school has an enrollment of 5,400 students and charges them about $47,000 a year in tuition and fees - though it wasn't the most expensive university near the top of the list.

This is the sixth straight year that Baylor has been No. 2 in the Big 12 and among the top five in Texas.

Recently, Texas A&M University has been ranked No. 4 - the only institution in Texas among the Top 20 - in Washington Monthly's rankings of the best universities in the country.

This fall, HPU opens Congdon Hall, the university's single largest investment in history at $120 million.
