Three Children Killed In West Sacramento Apartment

A father accused of killing his three children during a domestic dispute near Sacramento, California was arrested on Thursday, ABC News reports.

As authorities were on the way to his family's apartment in response to a domestic violence call, they received another phone call reporting that three children were possibly dead.

First responders performed life-saving measures on the children, but all three were pronounced dead at the scene.

Police have not released details on how the children died.

Police are actively searching for a male suspect.

He says the mother witnessed Hodges kill her children, and that she was a victim of domestic violence.

Police activity will be ongoing in the area through the night and into the morning hours.

She said the couple had been married for at least 12 years. West Sacramento Police Sgt. Roger Kinney said the mother is "traumatised" by the incident.

"The officers are absolutely impacted, along with the firefighters, and certainly the family, the neighbors", he said. In a small town, each of us, whether parents, neighbors, mentors, and just plain citizens, know that protecting our children is our most sacred duty, and the betrayal of that duty in the home is unfathomable and unconscionable.

He continued: "It's horrific and it's very hard to deal with".

Police then gave chase to find Hodges, who had fled the home in an attempt to escape punishment.

Theresa Bustamante who lives nearby, told the Californian television station that she wasn't aware anything was wrong either.

A makeshift memorial sprouted outside the family's second-floor apartment in a quiet, neatly maintained apartment complex with a gated driveway.

Remembering the happy children, Daniel Vertelnikov, who is friends with the youngsters, said: "We always played together".

The names of the mother and the children have not been released to the public.

"A California Highway Patrol officer pulled him over near Interstate 80 and West El Camino Avenue", reported The Sacramento Bee. "I was in my apartment all the time". Grief counselors will be on hand.

Hodges did not have a significant criminal history and a neighbor said he seemed like a good father before the slayings, according to the newspaper.

A candlelight vigil is scheduled on Thursday evening for the three victims, which include an 11-year-old boy, a 9-year-old girl and an 8-month-old infant boy. "It just happened. It's so sad", Daniel said.
