Those with long memories recall free-flowing highways the last time the Olympics came to town, as locals either left the city or heeded warnings to use public transportation or stay home.

Paris and LA originally both bid for 2024 but after the withdrawal of Boston, Budapest, Hamburg and Rome the International Olympic Committee chose to secure the two strong bidders as future hosts.

The World Baseball Softball Confederation congratulated Paris 2024 and LA 2028 Olympic Games on being awarded the Olympic and Paralympic Games, and reiterated its goal of securing the long-term future of baseball and softball on the Olympic Program.

Olympic baseball and softball in Paris in 2024 would mark a significant milestone for the sports in France.

Wasserman, mayor Eric Garcetti and U.S. Olympic gold medalist Allyson Felix are presenting, as the IOC prepares to award 2024 to Paris and 2028 to LA later this afternoon.

It marked the final act of a campaign that had been stripped of the usual intrigue ever since Paris and Los Angeles agreed to carve up 2024 and 2028 in July following encouragement from the IOC.

The International Olympic Committee announced it had approved the allocations - the result of a three-way deal - by vote Wednesday. The only other city to have hosted three Summer Olympics is London (1908, 1948, 2012). "We have the two best possible games for the Olympics in 2024 and 2028, in two great Olympic countries". The IOC made a decision to award two games at the same time, and LA later abandoned its bid for 2024 during negotiations with the IOC and Paris. In exchange for the compromise, LA will grab an extra $300 million or more that could help offset the uncertainties that lie ahead over an 11-year wait instead of seven.

The smooth finish to the race also eliminates the risk of the vote being tainted by the sort of scandal that has embroiled the ballot for the 2016 Olympics.

The LA Games have a budget of $5.3 billion and will essentially follow the plan they had in place for 2024, including housing athletes at the UCLA campus.

"I think it's a very positive message about the value of the Olympic movement and the value of the Olympic Games", said Sergei Bubka, the Olympic champion pole vaulter, who is an honorary member of the IOC. A big number, indeed, though it must be put into perspective: Earlier this summer, organizers in Tokyo estimated their cost for the 2020 Games at $12.6 billion.
