Gunman opens fire at school - police on scene

A student opened fire at a high school in a tiny town south of Spokane Wednesday, killing one student who tried to stop him, injuring three others and sending anxious parents to the school in a frenzied rush, authorities said.

Students ran for cover, while others were led to safety at nearby schools. He proceeded to take his weapons out. "That student did not survive", said Spokane County Sheriff Ozzie Knezovich.

But the armed student wasn't swayed by those words and shot him.

Knezovich did not identify the gunman or the fearless student who tried to engage the shooter when his first gun jammed.

The three young patients were all in satisfactory condition Wednesday afternoon. Freeman School District is in Rockford, WA about 15 miles SE of Spokane.

The victims' names have not been released.

A two-lane road into the community of about 500 people near the Idaho border was clogged with vehicles.

Spokane Public Schools, which are not part of the Freeman schools, posted online all of its schools were briefly on lockdown.

Following the shooting at the school of 327 students, some parents abandoned their cars stuck in traffic and walked up to a mile to reach their children, KHQ-TV reported.

According to tweets from Spokesman-Review reporter Jonathan Glover, the student killed was a boy who had attempted to confront the shooter.

One high school junior said "at least four" shots had been fired. As of 11:30 Benson said he had not yet heard from his younger stepson.

"They just sounded like popping", the student said.

"[They] said that he was going to do something stupid where it either might get him killed or in jail", the friend told KXLY4. The deceased victim is allegedly a student at Freeman High. Both victims were rushed to the Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center, and Dr. Jeff Collins (the facility's chief physician) says the situation is under control. "You never think about something happening like this at a small school".
