Wife: Man who shot congressman wanted to work on tax policy

South Carolina Rep. Jeff Duncan has said he said he was preparing to leave the baseball field when a man politely asked him whether it was a Democratic or Republican team before quietly walking off.

MARTIN: Before Hodgkinson traveled to Virginia, he lived in a small town near St. Louis called Belleville, Ill.

HANSI LO WANG, BYLINE: Well, we've heard from one of his friends growing up. That's where he met the former mayor of Alexandria, Bill Euille, who told The Washington Post he had spoken with Hodgkinson several times over the past month.

"There are a number of different indications now that this was a pre-meditated situation", Franks said Friday on CNN's "OutFront", though he declined to discuss the reported list.

The shooter, whom officials have identified as James T. Hodgkinson, 66, of Belleville, Illinois, was a huge fan of Sanders and frequently took to Facebook to criticize Donald Trump.

The gunman's brother, Mr Michael Hodgkinson, said: "I know he wasn't happy with the way things were going, the election results and stuff".

"I have never said life sucks, only the policies of the Republicans", he wrote in one letter.

Sanders said, "Violence of any kind is unacceptable in our society and I condemn this action in the strongest possible terms".

"I'm sorry that he did this but there's nothing I can do about it", she said. And she wouldn't go into anything about his politics but did add this detail that he sold everything he owned from his businesses.

The ATF is running a trace on two weapons, to include a rifle and a handgun. "The Second Amendment right to bear arms is to ensure that we always have a republic", he said, answering a question on gun control. And that vehicle was parked across from the scene of the shooting.

A single shot left Scalise, 51, with a shattered bone in his left hip and internal injuries that caused severe bleeding.

The charges were eventually dismissed, but witnesses told deputies Hodgkinson grabbed the girl by the hair and threw her on the floor.

"I can't believe he did this", she said, visibly upset.

Her brief talk Thursday with reporters indicated a man in turmoil, not necessarily a violent man, but a man beset by problems both at home and professionally. It was not immediately clear if she thought her husband's move was temporary. Here's what she said. I think that they'll come together for his family. Will you tell us about this place? The St. Clair County Sheriff's Department responded. And last November, Hillary Clinton beat Trump by just a few thousand votes.

SHAPIRO: NPR's Hansi Lo Wang in Belleville, Ill., thanks a lot.
