"What we could be looking at is the reigning MVP suddenly being on the trading block, because if he turns down this contract extension, the Thunder are then facing the reality they went through last summer, which is an MVP player, their franchise player, turning them down, and they cannot risk going into free agency and losing him for nothing".

Two weeks after the NBA Finals and almost three months after the end of the 2016-17 regular season, the NBA will finally name its most valuable player and hand out other key honor Monday night at its first-ever live awards ceremony in New York City.

After a couple of bad stops with the New York Knicks and Los Angeles Lakers, Coach D'Antoni made the most out of the talent he had on his Rockets team last season. Oklahoma City's Russell Westbrook, Houston's James Harden and San Antonio's Kawhi Leonard are the finalists for MVP of the 2016-17 season.

In the years gone by, regular season awards such as the Most Valuable Player (MVP), Defensive Player of the Year and Sixth Man of the Year were handed out within the first few weeks of the playoffs.

In addition to these standard awards, the National Basketball Association is mixing in a few new awards that will be awarded by fan vote. Kawhi has won the award for the past two years, so will he make it three-straight? For ROY, nominees are Malcolm Brogdon of the Milwaukee Bucks, and teammates Joel Embiid and Dario Saric of the Philadelphia 76ers. It will be shown live on the TNT Network and via live stream at WatchTNT and NBA.com.

Will it be Westbrook or Harden or maybe even Leonard that win NBA MVP?

Gordon gets the nod over teammate Lou Williams after finishing second on the Rockets in scoring at 16.2 points per game.

It's a big change from the usual, when they'd parcel them out one at a time during the playoffs and I don't think it's a change for the best at all. Another featured award is Coach of the Year.

And it's been so long since we had to cast our votes - at the end of the regular season as I recall - that I have no recollection of who I voted for.

The NBA Awards 2017 show will be presented on television starting at 9 p.m.

This one's easy. The Greek Freak improved in virtually every offensive category this season, earning second-team All-NBA honors amid a breakout campaign.
