Uber App Now Lets You Request a Ride for Someone Else

Uber has already launched this feature in more than 30 (unspecified) countries, but it plans to expand it to more 'soon.' Of course, you have to update the app to the latest version to access the feature.

While Uber is marketing the feature as something for senior citizens and their loved ones to use, the feature can be useful in many more cases like sending a drunk friend home or having a friend order you a vehicle when your phone is out of battery. "You can then select the rider from your address book, set their destination, and request the ride on their behalf". Riders can simply pay in cash once they've arrived to their destination. Riders will be able to contact the driver directly, and vice versa. The company says 10 percent of the global population consists of people aged 65 and older and the hope is to make the app more useful for everyone in the family. The rider receives the driver's phone number and is able to track them via a link. "We're committed to providing safe, reliable transportation options for everyone in the family - including seniors". Uber will charge the person who ordered the ride.

"On the product team, we're focused on making Uber accessible to everyone in the family, and on making people's lives easier around the world", "What we've learned through research is that at a macro level, people want an easy way to request a ride for a loved one". In its announcement, Uber also mentions its benefits for those who don't own a smartphone (gasp, in this day and age, you should be ashamed of yourself). Also, the company said Uber Freight won't charge drivers a commission, thereby eliminating issues that have affected its business model in the last couple of years.
