New smart speaker expected as Apple kicks off conference

And similar to Google and Amazon smart speakers, Apple said audio information is not being recorded or sent to the Apple's cloud until the "Hey Siri" voice command has been issued.

Apple also said it was making its virtual assistant Siri more aware of context, enabling it to recommend and remind users more accurately based on how they use their device. A Siri-based app called Siri-Smart Speaker, in which its objective in life is to follow user's voice command for controlling appliances, locks, lights, and more.

The smart speaker is not the only thing that Apple is expected to showcase at the WWDC though.

Apple will begin shipping the HomePod to the United States, Britain and Australia in December. HomePod has produced to work with the Apple Music support service.

At $349, the HomePod is more expensive than the most-expensive Amazon Echo - the $230 Echo Show - and the Google Home, priced at $129. HomePod is seven inches tall, and is intended as a "breakthrough" speaker in addition to being a personal assistant. A revamped Siri is also expected to be seen in the conference.

As if you didn't rely on Apple devices in your day-to-day life already, the Cupertino company just announced HomePod, its entry into the smart speaker arena.

If the speculation pans out, the speaker would be Apple's first new product since its smartwatch in 2015, Sunday, June 4, 2017. It unveiled the Apple Watch in September 2014.

As per the survey, in the previous month by analysis firm eMarketer found Echo speakers held 70.6% of the USA market, compared with 23.8% for Google Home.

"There is so much momentum building around these speakers that it would be hard for Apple not to come out with one", said industry analyst Patrick Moorhead of Moor Insights & Strategy. Cook is aiming to double services revenue, which also includes products like iCloud and Apple Music, to around $50 billion by 2020. Amazon has heavily dominated the field with its home speaker called Echo, which uses the digital assistant Alexa.

Siri has taken up a new hobby and has become something of a musicologist - telling you exactly who is playing down to tiny details like the name of the lead singer. And it would mark an effort by Apple to catch up with Amazon and Google. However, if its audio capabilities are as good as Apple claims, it could be inviting for iPhone and iPad owners looking for a single do-everything speaker for their home or apartment.
