The biannual awards recognise exceptional work by British and Commonwealth citizens, most of whom are not known to the wider public.

Author J K Rowling and cook-TV host Delia Smith have also been elevated to the Companion of Honour.

A MAJOR General, an Olympic champion and a research scientist are among those to be named by Her Majesty the Queen in the annual Birthday Honours List. On Twitter he said: "Honoured and proud to receive an OBE today". We continue to grieve the loss of a much-loved and respected colleague and friend while supporting his family through this truly hard time.

"To be recognised for contributing to a sport, for someone to feel I'm worthy of being nominated, and then to be deemed worthy, it's quite incredible", he said.

Lynda joined Oldham Council in 2001 and retired in December past year weeks before she was presented with the Chief Executive's special recognition award at Oldham Council's Top Awards ceremony.

Meanwhile, eight local residents have been honoured with British Empire Medals (BEM) which provide recognition to those who have demonstrated a "hands-on" service to the local community.

Rowling, who is already an OBE, has been made a Companion of Honour for services to literature and philanthropy.

Julie Walters CBE is given a damehood for services to drama - She is one of Britain's best-loved telly actress and she's a Patron of Women's Aid and of Roald Dahl's Marvellous Children's Charity.

Ed Sheeran receives an MBE for services to music and charity.

Other notable recipients within the entertainment industry include comedian Billy Connolly who will receive a knighthood for services to entertainment and charity.

Andy Murray's mum, Judy Murray will also take away an OBE.

Hitchin's Harinder Pattar, head of the Heathland School in the west London borough of Hounslow, has been appointed OBE for services to education. David Walliams and Sarah Lancashire have both received OBEs.
