Man arrested in theft of Portland train victim's ring

The man wanted for allegedly stealing a backpack and wedding ring from Ricky Best - one of the victims killed in the MAX attack - was wearing Best's wedding ring when he was arrested.

George Tschaggeny, 51, was wearing Best's ring when he was arrested at a small homeless camp under a Portland overpass, Simpson said.

According to The Oregonian, Tschaggeny is scheduled to be arraigned on Monday on allegations of second-degree theft, tampering with physical evidence, and second-degree abuse of a corpse. The term "alt-right" encompasses those who subscribe to a white nationalist ideology, and the suspect in the attack, Jeremy Joseph Christian, is a "known white supremacist", according to the Southern Poverty Law Center, having posted such material online.

In court on 30 May, Mr Christian shouted: "Death to the enemies of America".

Amid the horror and chaos, Simpson said, Tschaggeny removed the ring from Best's finger and stole his backpack.

Best's backpack and wedding ring were stolen from the scene, where he died from his stab wounds.

Police said the contents of Best's backpack were personal items important to his family.

Simpson said, "It's completely heartless".

"It's just unconscionable to do what he did", Simpson said.

Police put the word out Thursday night, and by Friday morning the man had been arrested. The department released surveillance video showing the theft suspect departing from the train after the stabbings. The suspect carrying another backpack in his left hand, unknown if it his.

Federal Bureau of Investigation spokeswoman Beth Anne Steele said earlier this week that the bureau is investigating the attack to determine whether to charge Christian with terrorism or a federal hate crime.

Micah David-Cole Fletcher, 21, won a poetry slam in 2013 with a piece about the prejudices faced by minorities, including Muslim Americans.

Several others called on him to express some sentiment since the men who died were also military veterans.
