It is on: Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor will fight August 26

UFC champ and mixed martial artist Conor McGregor will square off against Mayweather on August 26 in Las Vegas, Mayweather announced in an Instagram post Wednesday. Gilbert Manzano of the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported the fight will take place at the MGM Grand with an official announcement to come on Wednesday.

"THE FIGHT IS ON", McGregor tweeted several minutes earlier, posting a picture of himself next to one of Mayweather's father, Floyd Sr. It is unclear whether it was a mistake or whether McGregor did it on goal, as he is known to provoke his opponents.

Originally the fight was rumored for September 16, but that date has now been occupied by the boxing match between Saul "Canelo" Alvarez and Gennady "GGG" Golovkin.

Mixed martial artist McGregor, who has never boxed professionally, became the UFC's first dual-division champion in November 2016 and has previously challenged Mayweather to a fight under mixed martial arts rules. But with a fight which could pay each man in excess of $100 million, he reconsidered.

The fight is highly anticipated, since it is extremely unexpected and new that a UFC champion with no particular experience or strict training in boxing would challenge an undefeated boxer, like Mayweather, in his area of expertise. However, Mayweather, who has a flawless 49-0 record, is the huge favorite over McGregor.

According to the Los Angeles Times, however, Mayweather Promotions has since retracted the request.

Neither UFC president Dana White, Mayweather Promotions CEO Leonard Ellerbe or Showtime's Stephen Espinoza could be reached for comment.

The 28-year-old McGregor is seeking a boxing license in Nevada to take on Mayweather.

"We haven't taken a bet on the favorite", said longtime Las Vegas oddsmaker Jimmy Vaccaro of the South Point, one the few sportsbooks to have odds up on the fight.

The two fighters engaged in a long, often-public negotiation over the ensuing months.
