It will be Iran's fifth appearance at soccer's premier tournament, reports Xinhua news agency.

In his twitter account, Rouhani congratulated the players on their "decisive advance" to the 2018 World Cup, and thanked them for "making all Iranians happy", and Zarif posted a photo of cheerful Iranian fans in the stadium with a congratulatory caption.

Sardar Azmoun scored in the 23rd minute and Mehdi Taremi added in the 88th at Azadi Stadium in Tehran.

As has been the case throughout the campaign, Queiroz's team stifled their opposition, giving little away in front of goal as they continued a remarkable streak of not conceding in qualifying that stretches back all the way to November 2015.

Uzbekistan are eight points behind top placed Iran at the third spot and have only two games remaining.

Vice-president Eshaq Jahangiri was present at the stadium for the game, among the nearly 60,000 supporters celebrating when the referee blew full-time.

"I came out to join this national celebration", he said.

Carlos Queiroz announced the news during Iran-Uzbekistan post-match conference.

"On behalf of the Asian football family, I would like to congratulate the Islamic Republic of Iran for their convincing and consistent campaign throughout the qualifiers to become the first Asian team to qualify for Russian Federation 2018".

Asian Football Confederation president Sheikh Salman bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa praised the consistency of the Iran team.

The team is eight points clear of third-placed Uzbekistan with two qualifying games left out of 10, so can not be denied a top-two finish.

He received a yellow card and missed the next match against South Korea.
