E3 2017: Nintendo Will Support 3DS Beyond 2018

After grilling the man, here are some of our key findings.

I think we were all a bit surprised when Nintendo revealed the existence of a 2DS XL back in April, which is set for release on July 28 for $150. "And so that's how we think these through". And they want to have content for that vast library. They should be looking to learn from their mistakes.

What I fear is that Nintendo Switch will suffer the same fate as the Wii U: A painful demise at the lack of third-party software. So it was clearly a priority. Both these IPs fit into Nintendo's longtime strategy of producing family-friendly games that also catch the eye of more serious gamers.

Fils-Aime: Internal, right. Exactly. What would you like to see in the new Metroid or Pokemon title?

"It's more of a learning from the Wii U launch". The Switch console does not have voice chat capability built in. But Reggie cautions that this is just one execution of the way it may work. "What we're working through is, 'okay, what's going to be the best way to make that happen, to make that available?' Certainly, we recognize there's an appetite for all of our great legacy content". The headset is plugged into the dongle.

"So let's be clear". You can see the schedule, highlights from the previous streams and watch the stream itself on Nintendo's E3 website. That is not going to be the only solution. Nintendo has chosen to require a mobile phone to utilize voice chat on the Switch even though no other console maker has gone that route. Interestingly, Fils-Aime also stated that Nintendo isn't interested in promoting the Nintendo Switch as any sort of replacement or upgrade from the 3DS. It's going to require a mobile device and be delivered by an app.

Going on, he said: "We say that it's a home console that you take with you and play with anyone, anywhere, anytime".

Totilo: Do you plan to sell your older games to people? Nintendo has clearly learned its lessons from the Wii U by scheduling a big game on the Switch nearly every single month until the end of the year, but imagine if all the developers making games for the 3DS were making Switch games instead?

Totilo: It'd be great to be able to download and play some GameCube games on my Switch, Reggie.

If you're not ready to give your 3DS up just yet, don't worry.

Unfortunately, the Pokemon game for Switch, Metroid Prime 4, Yoshi, and Kirby didn't make it to the infographic, but there's still hope for at least one of them.

Nintendo recognizes that demand varies by game, and wants to make sure that when it comes to the most requested titles, fans are assured that their excitement isn't unheard.

Phones being "ubiquitous" is a bad argument as not every Switch owner will have a phone, but every Switch owner will have a Switch!

Nintendo Switch Online is coming in 2018.
