Doctor: Scalise improving, came in at 'imminent risk of death'

The Louisiana Republican was shot in the hip Wednesday morning in the baseball practice shooting by an IL man with grudges against President Donald Trump and the GOP. "We have controlled his internal bleeding and his vital signs have stabilized".

"He will be in the hospital for a considerable period of time, presumably weeks", said Jack Sava, trauma director at MedStar Washington Hospital Center, who spoke Friday about the Louisiana Republican who remains in critical condition at the hospital in the District.

Scalise should be able to walk again, Sava said.

His family said they appreciate the support they've received from lawmakers and the president, and are thankful for the bravery of the special agents.

The House of Representatives' No. 3 Republican leader was in grave condition when he was first shot.

"We have no intention to remove all bullet fragments at this point", he said, noting that is common because finding and removing that many fragments is more risky than leaving them inside the body. Two officers were shot, as were congressional aide Zach Barth and lobbyist Matt Mika. "Steve, in his own way, may have brought some unity to our long-divided country", he said.

After the suspect fired a few more shots, "we knew what it was", Flake said. "The congressman will require additional operations, and will be in the hospital for some time".

Investigators said Hodgkinson had obtained his rifle and handgun from licensed firearms dealers, and Capitol Police said they had "no evidence to suggest that the purchases were not lawful".

Hodgkinson - an IL home inspector who had been living out of his van near the park - had a social media page filled with criticism of Republicans and the Trump administration.

Meanwhile, the other victims, including Capitol Police officer Crystal Griner, are expected to recover.

His most recent surgery was aimed at healing internal injuries and a broken bone in his leg.

"Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, House Speaker Paul Ryan and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi stood side by side to shout: "€Let'€™s play ball!"€ and the crowd chanted "U-S-A!

Though Scalise was conscious at the scene after he was shot and his office said he talked to his wife before his first surgery, he was in shock by the time he arrived at the hospital, according to Sava.

"It's my job to be pessimistic, so if you accuse me of being optimistic, I feel bad about that", Sava said.

A touching photo shows the moment Democrats gathered to pray Wednesday morning after hearing the news of a shooting at the field of their GOP colleagues as they practiced for a charity baseball game.

Richmond said he assumes he will be Thursday night's starting pitcher for the Democrats, and the former college baseball player is likely to make Democrats the favorite tonight.
