The House has returned to business after a gunman fired at a baseball practice, critically injuring a top Republican lawmaker and wounding several others.

Also hurt but released from hospitals were two Capitol Police officers, David Bailey and Crystal Griner, and House GOP aide Zack Barth. Scalise is a member of the team and had been fielding balls at second base in preparation for the game when he was shot.

President Donald Trump is calling for unity in a video message to the Congressional Baseball game, telling the Republican and Democratic competitors "we are here to serve this nation we love and the people who call it home".

Although the weather in Washington looks headed toward a near-flawless summer night, an obvious and immovable shadow is being cast over Thursday night's Congressional Baseball Game - a tradition that began more than a century ago.

Trump and first lady Melania Trump visited the hospital Wednesday evening.

A Washington Metropolitan Police Department report says the officer was manning a traffic checkpoint when the driver failed to obey repeated orders to stop.

Hodgkinson's social media postings included anti-conservative rants.

Investigators said in a statement that the Federal Bureau of Investigation has searched the van, which was parked not far from the Alexandria, Virginia, baseball field where Wednesday's shooting took place.

The U.S. Capitol Police said Hodgkinson used a 9 mm handgun and a 7.62-caliber rifle in the shooting, and traces run by investigators showed he evidently acquired the weapons legally.

The deciding factor will probably be Louisiana Democrat Cedric Richmond, who may be the best to have ever played in the game. Capitol Police said they had "no evidence to suggest that the purchases were not lawful". Hodgkinson had arrests in his background but showed required firearms licenses to an IL deputy who confronted him about shooting a cornfield last spring.
