"She was very scared", Winner's mother, Billie Winner-Davis, told Cooper. "There's no reason to hold her".

The government claims that victor downloaded and printed a top-secret NSA report, removed the printed version of the report from her employer's premises, and then mailed it to The Intercept, a highly regarded global media outlet that exposes government wrongdoing.

Investigators say they were able to track victor by observing that the document leaked to The Intercept appeared to be folded, which led them to believe it had been printed out. She is an Air Force Veteran who speaks three other languages: Dari, Farsi, and Pashto.

Victor grew up in Kingsville, Texas, and enlisted in the Air Force after graduating from high school. During that time, he said, victor provided real-time translation to Americans conducting field missions.

The judge said he was anxious about what happened to the portable hard drive prosecutors mentioned, as well as references victor had made in her notebook about the Middle East.

The case against victor, who worked for NSA contractor Pluribus International Corporation in August, Georgia, appears formidable. But the NSA has operated a $286 million complex in Augusta since 2012.

On February 11, she was particularly active on the social network, tweeting directly at the President, describing him as an "orange fascist".

An FBI affidavit says victor confessed to copying and mailing the classified report when agents searched her home last Saturday.

In a court affidavit filed late Tuesday, the Federal Bureau of Investigation said it seized Winner's USA passport, two spiral-bound notebooks, two laptop computers, and a Department of Defense-issued country handbook for Iran. She told investigators that the document sat in her vehicle trunk for several days in May before she sent it to a media outlet. Kip Grosenick reported from Augusta, Georgia. Associated Press writer Jeff Martin in Atlanta contributed to this report.

A judge has ruled that a woman charged with leaking secrets to a reporter will remain jailed until her trial after prosecutors argued that she might possess more stolen intelligence and could try to flee the country.

In this June 6, 2017 image made from video, Billie Winner-Davis, left, the mother of Reality Leigh Winner, and her stepfather Gary Davis, speak to media about their daughter in east Augusta, Ga. Before she was charged with leaking USA government secrets, Reality Leigh Winner shared sometimes scathing opinions on President Donald Trump and his policies for the whole world to see. "The NSA report, dated May 5, provides details of a 2016 Russian military intelligence cyberattack on a USA voting software supplier, though there is no evidence that any votes were affected by the hack", CNN reports.

The FBI said unauthorised disclosure of the secret document "could reasonably result in exceptionally grave damage to the national security", though the government has not alleged that victor sought to share the report with foreign agents.

The criminal complaint against victor did not link the charges with the story, but a senior federal official confirmed to NBC News that victor is the accused leaker of the document published by The Intercept.
